Rachel's Kids House of Hope - What makes us "unique".
Rachel's Kids House of Hope's growth is thanks to the generosity of our community through donations and fundraising support.
At the House of Hope we pride ourselves in helping our little locals realize big dreams with the help of our community room, splatter paint room and sensory room. We have a beautiful centre with an array of stimulating toys and equipment along with stations offering children state of the art tactile and sensory processing tools keeping them engaged, active and creative.
The House of Hope is open to everyone in our community to use as a safe place to take your children for learning and fun. But there is one thing that makes us "unique" and that is that we are the only centre in SD&G and surrounding area that offers a Super Kids Camp for special needs Children.
Rachel's Kids is extremely proud to have helped hundreds of families over the course of the years through various programs such as Helping Hands and Small Moments of Joy; however, one question continued to surface. What camp services/programs are offered in SD&G for our special needs?
Raising a child with special needs can be difficult for many families. Parents to children with more "invisible" challenges such as ADHD, Autism (ASD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and any developmental difference or delays may not only be dealing with the day to day hurdles and additional financial battles, but also a lack of opportunity for respite. Typically, when a parent discovers their child has a developmental difference such as Autism, they are often faced with denial, fears and concerns that can be overwhelming. Following the initial shock, parents often find themselves delving into a vast amount of self-education, learning of coping skills and applications for therapies. It can all be so overwhelming.
Children with special needs often require special equipment, services and care that may not be available to them in daycares or camps without having to hire, out of pocket, one to one support, therefore many families go without and conceivably wait for years to get services that would have been beneficial if used earlier. For the parents of children with special needs, the gap is wide: So many are forced to cobble together a plan to help their children, often at great financial and personal expense. This is tragic, and we at Rachel's Kids understand how difficult it can be, so we’ve decided to help in any way we could.
Within 6 months of Rachel's Kids House of Hope's Grand Opening, we proudly launched our first Super Kids Summer Camp!
Our campers came from all over SD&G and surrounding area to join our day camp throughout the course of the summer. We offered eight weeks of respite for families and worked closely with supporting agencies to ensure our families received as much funding as possible to cover costs. What a successful summer! Themed days, activities and loads of adventures out in the community providing constant stimulation for those with sensory processing disorders and outdoors activities for those requiring exerting some energy. We couldn't have asked for a better group of campers to launch our first summer camp!
Rachel's Kids Super Kids Camp counselors are thoroughly screened and require a degree in the field or working toward their certification. They are certified ECEs, PSWs, DSWs, SSWs, EA’s and Teachers and we are proud to have them on our team.
At Rachel's Kids, we pride ourselves in being the only centre in SD&G and surrounding area to offer a camp for our little local with special needs and we have our amazing community to thank for this opportunity.
Without the generosity of our sponsors, your donations and our volunteers we were able to make a difference for our families and our special needs friends and it's rippled into something more amazing than we could ever imagine.
If you are interested in sending your child to Rachel's Kids Super Kids Summer Camp, registrations typically take place early March, so our staff can assist in requesting your funding through various applicable agencies and grants. Keep an eye out on our website, Facebook page and Twitter for intake dates.
